Shu Qi's Personal Site
Out of the Cinders, into the Limelight
What can you say of a Taiwanese teenager who poses nude for photographers because she's too short to make it as a runway model, then while other girls at her age go through the rites of university or college life, she goes off to Hong Kong, where she makes a name for herself acting in Category III films? In a 1997 article, TIME magazine likened actress Shu Qi to the modern day Cinderella - a reference that might have elicited an amused grin on the faces of those in the know two years back, but given the young star's recent rise and rise, no one's laughing. Shu Qi surprised the film circle by starring next to Leslie Cheung in the mainstream film Viva Erotica in 1996. The film earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the prestigious 33rd Golden Horse Awards as well as this year's event. She also bagged two awards at the Hong Kong Film Awards that year. Today, the 22-year-old actress has begun shedding her porn-star image for better roles in recent Hong Kong hits such as The Stormriders, Love Generation: Hong Kong, and the critically-acclaimed City of Glass. Some of her latest co-stars include the likes of Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. Shu Qi (pronounced Soo Chee, or Shu Kay in Cantonese) grew up as Lin Li Huei in Taipei, the daughter of a government official and a housewife but the teenager soon grew weary of school-life. "I didn't want to study in Taiwan, so I came to Hong Kong hoping to become a star, make a lot of money... I know I am very greedy! When my parents knew I was making movies, of course they were very unhappy, but they didn't object." Though not as well-endowed as Amy Yip ('Bor Ba'), or as sultry as Peng Tan, the daintiness that surrounds Shu Qi, and the sleepy look she wears soon made her the Princess of Category III movies. She appeared in Sex & Zen II, displayed every body part in the picture book Shu Qi Xie Zhen Ji (The Shu Qi Picture Collection), and even now is still one of Asia's most popular pin-up girls on the Internet. With no acting background, and a foreigner in the Hong Kong film industry, the road to success was naturally rough for Shu Qi. "If you're an unknown and from Taiwan, there is no such thing as doing art and high class films. Hsu Chi knows if she doesn't strip she can't be a star," says writer-producer Manfred Wong. But unlike porn-stars such as Amy Yip, who failed to make it big in mainstream movies, Shu Qi has something going for her. "Perhaps it is because I learn fast, subconsciously I wanted to be filmed by the camera. I am very self-confident, acting is my work, so I will definitely do my best," she says. In her latest film, City of Glass, Shu Qi stars next to Leon Lai as his lover in an adulterous affair. The film, directed by Mabel Cheung Yuen Ting, has won rave reviews while raking profits at the Hong Kong box-office. The film has also received 11 nominations at this year's 35th Golden Horse Awards, and is bound for the Berlin Film Festival. While Shu Qi admits acting in Category III films has helped her mature, she still feels feels she's got more ground to cover. When asked what the rising star thinks about herself, she only comments: "Like a stone that hasn't yet become a piece of jade." City of Glass sneaks this weekend in theaters across Singapore.
